Why Is Freestyle Often Taught First?
Freestyle is often one of the first strokes introduced to children because it helps develop many of the fundamental skills they need to become confident swimmers.
As children learn freestyle, they work on body position, breathing, kicking, arm coordination, balance, and water confidence. Learning these skills together helps children understand how their body moves through the water and gradually become more comfortable swimming independently.
Freestyle also encourages children to coordinate different movements at the same time, such as kicking while moving their arms and controlling their breathing. With regular practice, these movements become more natural and help children swim with greater efficiency and confidence.
Building these foundations early gives children a strong base to progress to other strokes and more advanced swimming skills. Rather than simply learning a stroke, freestyle helps children develop the core swimming skills they will continue to use throughout their swimming journey.
