Kicking vs Pulling: Which Matters More?

Parents often ask whether their child should focus more on kicking or pulling when learning freestyle. The answer is that both are important, but for beginners, developing a strong and consistent kick is often the first step.

Kicking helps children maintain their balance, body position, and stability in the water. It also teaches them how to generate movement and stay comfortable while swimming.

Once the kick becomes more consistent, children can gradually introduce the arm movements and learn how to coordinate their pulling with their kick and breathing. This makes it easier for them to develop a smoother and more efficient freestyle stroke.

Think of learning to swim like building a house — a strong foundation needs to come before everything else. By focusing on the basics first, children can build the skills and confidence needed to put the full stroke together naturally.
