Why Floating Comes Before Swimming

Before children learn to swim, learning to float is an important first step. Floating helps children become comfortable in the water, find their balance, and understand how their body moves and feels in the water.
Learning to float also teaches children to stay calm and relaxed, which is an important part of developing water confidence. Once they are comfortable floating independently, they can gradually move on to skills such as kicking, breathing, and learning different swimming strokes.
Building these foundational skills early gives children a stronger base to progress safely and confidently as they become better swimmers. Every strong swimmer starts with the basics, and floating is one of the most important skills to learn first.
