At Little Orcas, floating is one of the very first skills we teach.
Floating is the foundation of safe and effective swimming. Before children learn strokes and advanced techniques, they must first feel secure and supported in the water. When a child can float confidently, they learn to relax, breathe steadily, and move with control.
Why Do We Start with Floating?

Floating helps children to:
Build trust in the water
Understanding that the water can support their body reduces fear and builds confidence.
Develop breathing control
Calm, steady breathing is essential for all swimming skills.
Stay calm and safe
A child who knows how to float can pause, regain composure, and conserve energy when needed.
Strong swimmers begin with strong floating skills.
Once floating becomes natural and comfortable, learning to swim becomes smoother, safer, and far more enjoyable.
